EUSTIS — Two Lake County firefighters and a lieutenant were honored for their service in rescuing dozens of people from a building that collapsed into a Clermont-area sinkhole last year.
Lake County firefighters Carlos Herrera and Matthew Barton and Lieutenant Jeremy Hendrix received plaques for their service on Feb. 23 at the Eustis Elks Lodge #1578 during the 2013 Annual Banquet recognizing top local law enforcement and fire rescue personnel.
The three were stationed at Fire Station 112 in Four Corners on Aug. 11 and were first on the scene helping residents evacuate a three-story structure at the Summer Bay Resort as it partially collapsed into a large sinkhole.
“Their actions that evening rose to the highest standards of Lake County firefighters,” said Lake County Public Safety Fire Chief John Jolliff. “I am proud of each of them.”
