Clermont, FL – Lake Firefighters were called to douse a propane fed fire that broke out at Lakeridge Winery Sunday afternoon where the food vendors were outside cooking. A food vendor area of the winery was evacuated for a short period of time, as well as the main building of the winery as firefighters quickly put out the fire and checked for extension of the fire into the main building.
According to Lt. Brian Gamble, Vice President of the Professional Firefighters of Lake County, “The food vendors were set up outside, south side of the building, under an overhang that was connected to the main building.” Firefighters from Groveland and Lake County responded to the fire and were on the scene within minutes. “It was originally dispatched as a brush fire and quickly upgraded to a propane and building fire once more details came in to the 9-1-1 call takers. Everyone was very fortunate, and the fire was extinguished before spreading into the main building of the winery. We evacuated the winery building as a precautionary measure.”
One food vendor worker sustained minor burns during the incident but was not transported to the hospital. No visitors or firefighters were injured however damage to the food area was enough to result in it being closed for repairs.
Captain Mike Vitta, Fire Investigator for Lake County Fire Rescue, investigated the cause of the fire. His findings pointed to a propane tank possibly being knocked over causing a gas leak that was ignited by open flames being used for cooking. The propane company is also investigating to rule out any defects or failure of the tank.
